The 5S System

  1. Sort (Seiri):

    • Purpose: The first step involves sorting through items in the workplace to separate what is necessary from what is unnecessary.
    • Activities: Identify and remove unnecessary items from the workspace. This helps in reducing clutter and streamlining the work area.
  2. Set in Order (Seiton):

    • Purpose: After sorting, the next step is to organize the necessary items in a systematic manner for efficient use.
    • Activities: Assign specific locations for items, label them, and ensure that everything has a designated place. This step is about creating a logical and easily accessible layout.
  3. Shine (Seiso):

    • Purpose: This step focuses on cleanliness and maintaining a tidy workspace to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
    • Activities: Regular cleaning and inspection of the workplace. The goal is to identify and address potential issues before they become problems. A clean and organized workspace contributes to improved morale and productivity.
  4. Standardize (Seiketsu):

    • Purpose: Establishing and maintaining consistent standards for the workplace organization created in the previous steps.
    • Activities: Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for maintaining an organized and clean workspace. This step helps in sustaining the improvements made through Sort, Set in Order, and Shine.
  5. Sustain (Shitsuke):

    • Purpose: Ensure that the improvements achieved through the 5S system are maintained and become a part of the organization's culture.
    • Activities: Develop a culture of continuous improvement, train employees, and establish routines for regular audits and reviews. Sustainment involves ongoing efforts to reinforce the 5S principles and prevent a return to old, less efficient practices.
